Learn & Earn

At Hong Leong Group, we notice gaps in the skills-based talent pool and recognized the need to create an avenue to develop young talents to become qualified employee with the right knowledge and skills set.

The Foundation explored ways to garner the interest and nurture talent of young Malaysians especially those from an underprivileged background to participate in skills-based studies and be competitive on a global scale.

German Dual Vocational Training Programme

In February 2016, the Hong Leong Foundation offered financial aid to 16 apprentices to pursue Skills Diploma in mechatronics under the German Dual Vocational Training (“GDVT”) Programme for 28 months. The programme is recognised by the Malaysian Department of Skills Development and the Malaysian German Chamber of Commerce and Industry accreditation. The theory and classroom training are conducted at the Penang Skills Development Centre in Penang.

The apprentices enjoy the following perks throughout the duration of their studies:

  • full financial aid which covers the programme fees
  • on-the-job work experience
  • monthly allowance of RM900
  • accommodation
  • enrichment classes

The apprentices will gain work experience at participating operating companies – Southern Steel Berhad, Dynacraft Industries Sdn Bhd and Carsem (M) Sdn Bhd. These companies are registered with the JPK and the trainers are certified as well. Apprentice assessments are conducted periodically to ensure that apprentices are meeting the programme requirements.

Additionally, the apprentices undergo enrichment programmes known as ‘Reach Out and Rise (ROAR Penang)’ conducted by SOLS 24/7. To date, the apprentices have completed Year 1 (Levels 1 & 2), and are furthering their studies to Level 3 of the programme modules.

The apprentices will complete their studies in July 2018.
