Newsroom Community Development
While the COVID-19 pandemic has affected all Malaysians, and there is a rallying cry of "We are all in this together" it has not affected everyone equally. The Movement Control Order (“MCO”) that followed soon after may have disrupted businesses and communities, but it’s the livelihoods of the poorest and the most marginalised that are suffering the worst effects. These hard-hit communities are struggling to have access to essentials we often take for granted, things like shelter, food, healthcare, and other basic necessities that can help protect them from COVID-19.
Hong Leong Foundation joined hands with 24 local non-profit organizations ("NGOs") to provide financial aid and basic provisions to those severely impacted during and after the pandemic. These NGOs are not only directly involved with the hard-hit communities, but also have the expertise to make key decisions to best respond to their needs in the most efficient way.
To date, the total amount of RM3 million provided by the Hong Leong Foundation Relief Fund has helped in-need families, seniors, different-abled individuals, farmers, a hospital and, drug and medical device producers to help in the fight against COVID-19, and, even animals. It’s times like these when we see the best of humanity, when we come together to help those who are most impacted– even when the future seems unpredictable.
