Newsroom Community Development

The Silent Teddies Bakery is a social enterprise started by The Community Service Center for the Deaf (CSCD). This community business aims to provide members of CSCD with an opportunity to run their own enterprise and for the partaking members to be young self reliant entrepreneurs.

In 2009, Hong Leong Foundation awarded a scholarship to Khew Yun Loi, one of the students at CSCD on a bakery course at Taylors College who incidentally was the first hearing impaired student on the course. There were operational challenges such as the need for an interpreter throughout the duration of the course which poses a challenge for future students who have disabilities and what Taylors and other colleges could do to have a better support system.

One of the provisions for awarding the scholarship was that Khew must transfer knowledge and skills back to the other members of CSCD for the start up of the Silent Teddies project which the Hong Leong Foundation under their Small Enterprise Program helped initiate with a grant of RM 60,940.

Officially launched on 6 September 2010, the bakery is now ready for business.
